Since we have no marketing department we have prepared this as a DIY kit. This was developed from a wonderful idea by Michael Kelleher who did something quite similar to this. He was swift enough to grab our logo and create letterhead. He wrote out an introduction to his book with a quote from Creeley along with a copy of his book to about 50 or so reviewers around the world. Long story short he was very successful. He now lives on a yacht sailing between Buffalo and Tierra del Fuego.

Well that is not true, of course. But he was pretty damn successful with his book. It’s a fine bit of work but he really went out there with it and made things catch fire. This is not my area of expertise, marketing has always eluded me. But this is why our sales are lagging. Not that we have poorly chosen books … No it is because I haven’t really marketed your book the way it should be done. Part of this was the distribution on Cafepress. This was not a long-term viable option but got books out there.

We are here now. And that is all that matters now! Your book is great or I would not have wasted time on this. It costs $1500 in graphic services, development, and general human services to make this book come alive! This is what I am good at and Mike was kind enough on advising me on how what makes a great author press kit and what does not. Mike is the artistic director of Just Buffalo literary center so he sees a lot of these things and was quite kind in his help.

On the next page are several resources for sending out your book. Order books on the webpage provided. Make out a letter of introduction on the author letterhead included. Send the book and letter out to any of the 150 reviewers, magazines and journals in a webpage as well as in a savable Excel document. Simply use your mouse to right click on the link as save to your desktop and open with a spreadsheet program. [Special thanks to Amy King for providing this list!] This is all ready to import into the letterhead as a mail merge! Also included is a link to Spencer Selby’s list of experimental journals. This list is kept current and has links along with post addresses. And to finish up are a list of links where your book is available for sale.

  • A strong blurb or two along with a brief introduction to your work
  • BlazeVOX [books] information (already in the letter which you can edit at will)
  • Contact information for you and the press. My contact info and signature is in the letter. Simply edit it to meet your needs and send it to the potential reviewer.
  • A wiliness to travel to do readings in the area is always a good thing to add. That is if you want to go to do readings. Our books are available for order through university bookstores – so it is a snap to have things set up for your reading!
